Counties of England

(also: Preparation of Fremdsprachenwettbewerb Englisch)

Tasks and Rules of the Project

  1. Form a group of 4 - 5 pupils.
    Together choose a county of England that you would like to work on.
  2. Collect information on your county from different English sources.
    Do not forget to note down your sources (titles of books, internet addresses).
    Do not start with any texts in German.
    Start a group folder for texts, pictures, notes and leave it in school.
  3. Sort out and group your information according to the aspects of
    * Geography / Towns, Villages (What does the county look like?)
    * History (When did people first hear about the county? Was there any special event in history in this area?)
    * Economy / Agriculture (How do people earn their money? What do they produce?)
    * Tourist attractions / events (Why do tourists come to places in the county?)
    * Special sights (Are there interesting buildings, monuments, ancient remains?)
    * Famous persons (Is there any well-known sportsman, writer, artist, politician, doctor, inventor ... who was born there or lives there?)
  4. Write your own texts on the given topics and illustrate them.
    Do not just copy them from the internet or from elsewhere.
    Two thirds of the texts can be group work, one third should be individual work.
    Decide as a group what you would like to write about in each way.
    Write eight to ten pages altogether. Type them carefully.
  5. Correct each other's texts and / or get them corrected by your teacher or other persons with a good command of English.
    Add a vocabulary list of at least 30 - 40 words at the end and learn them.
  6. You can work in the computer room and / or in our classroom in lessons.
    Talk English during lessons.
    Give yourselves some homework after / for each lesson.
    Note down on the platform what exactly you have done in a lesson and what your homework is.
  7. Hand in your work on Monday, 18th December, 2006.
    In the double period on that day prepare a lecture to the class on your county / counties to be presented in the first week after the Christmas holidays.
